The Australian Open Tennis Championships is one of the four major Grand Slam tennis tournaments held every year. The event lasts for 14 days and take place in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The tournament was first held in 1905, grass courts were originally used, but since 1988 the it has been played on hard courts at Melbourne Park.


The Australian Open is the first Grand Slam tennis tournament of the year starting around the middle of January and lasting for two weeks. The other three are the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open.


The tournament features men's and women's singles; men's, women's, and mixed doubles and junior's championships; as well as wheelchair, legends and exhibition events.


The Australian Open was the first Grand Slam tournament to feature indoor play during wet weather or extreme heat with its two primary courts, Rod Laver Arena and Hisense Arena, equipped with retractable roofs.


The Australian Open typically has very high attendance – second only to the US Open.


The 2014 Australian Open marks the 102nd staging of the event. In recent years, the Australian Open has often provided the platform for unheralded players to emerge with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (2008), Marcos Baghdatis (2006), Rainer Schuettler (2003) and Arnaud Clement (2001) among the surprise finalists.
